Ethnography Field Note 1

March 11 – Essay for WRIT

Today, I did a lot of writing/editing for my first WRIT essay. I began work at around 12:30 and had a difficult time getting words on the page that I liked. I usually have a hard time writing during the day, and the sun shining into my hotel room this afternoon made it hard to forget that it was daytime. Overall, I wanted to get words and ideas down, but I also wanted to make sure I was not simply typing out sentences that would later be deleted. Instead, I needed to find my central idea, and follow that throughout my essay. I did, however, know that I would be getting feedback from others on my writing so it did not need it to be perfect. After a few minutes of playing around with different phrases, I got up to grab a snack. After sitting back down, I tried to see if I could write without distractions for five minutes. After focusing in for what seemed like five minutes, I realized that I had been writing fluidly for about fifteen minutes, and had written a paragraph of solid writing. After that point, I was able to write for an hour and a half, getting more work done than I had originally expected. I felt happy with the writing that I had done, despite some of the procrastination that happened at the start. At this point, I took a break and decided to do more work later.
