Commonplace Book 9

“The wish to escape argument is really the wish to escape language, which is really the wish to escape politics, and is finally the wish to escape mortality—and it won’t matter a whit” (Fish 14).

I chose this quotation from Stanley Fish’s “Why We Can’t Get Along” because of how much I agreed with the statement. Over the course of the book, Fish discusses different forms of argument and what place they have in society. In this passage from the final paragraph of his book, Fish emphasizes that argument is part of human nature and will not go away regardless of what may happen in the future. I felt like this quotation encapsulates the central idea of this book, which is that argument is inevitable.
