Ethnography Field Note 4

April 16 – What’s a Hoya Discussion Post

Today, I wrote a discussion post for a What’s a Hoya module to receive housing points for next semester. Unfortunately, this was the last day possible to complete any of the modules, so I felt rushed to complete the post. Even though it only needed to be a few sentences, there were over 400 students on the discussion board so I was not sure how many people would read my post. For this reason, I felt more conscientious of my writing and had to make sure that it came out the way I wanted it to. Still, I began writing at 6 pm in my hotel room and felt like the assignment would not take too long. Like my other discussion posts, this writing was very conversational and informal, and additionally, this assignment only required completion, so there was not much at stake. In fact, the whole assignment was optional and was only necessary if you wanted to get extra points for housing. After taking a break for dinner, I began to write my response for the discussion post. Thankfully, this only took me about 10 minutes to complete, and once again, I noticed that discussion post writing was much easier and quicker than essay writing. I also think this assignment not being graded or required took away the pressure of making it my best work. Overall, this ended up being a very laid back assignment, did not demand too much thought, and took less time than almost all of my writing assignments this semester.
