Ethnography Field Note 5

May 2 – Birthday Message to my Grandmother

This morning, I sent a text message to my grandmother for her birthday. Due to the pandemic I have not been able to see her in person, so I wanted to make sure that I sent a message to let her know that my family and I have been thinking about her. I was not planning on sending a message that was too long, but I still wanted to make sure that it was thoughtful. I also knew that my grandmother was not great with technology, so an extensive text message would not be the best idea. Even though there is not much at stake for this text message, I tried to put as much thought into it as I could. I decided to send the text when I woke up in the morning so I wouldn’t forget. As I started typing, I tried to think of the most concise and caring message I could send, ensuring that my grandmother knew how much I appreciated her. This was obviously a much different form of writing than an assignment for school, as it required more thought and care. Despite not being a traditional form of writing, this task required the same thinking process of sentence structure and how to word certain phrases. Still, because the text message was fairly short, it did not take me long to think of the right words to say. After typing out a message that I liked, I sent the message and waited for a response from my grandmother.
